Web Dev Development Update

Posted in Giggig Web Dev on July 27th, 2011 by jamie – Be the first to comment

Well the development of Giggig Web Dev version 5 is underway. I am currently using wxWidgets to create a cross platform GUI for Web Dev, and hope to move to the WebKit rendering engine (used by Apple’s Safari Browser) to render our content.

I hope to release a preview build soon (mid August?) for all platforms (Windows, Windows x64, Linux, OS X), I think that this first release will only showcase the GUI, as not much more is done yet. If you are interested in development or have experience with C++ please don’t hesitate to get involved for information email me [webmaster [at] giggigNOSPAM [dot] co [dot] uk].

I also hope to mimic the Mozilla Firefox About box and Update box (from the good old classic version 3).

A Word on Web Dev

Posted in Developer, Giggig Web Dev on July 18th, 2011 by jamie – Be the first to comment

Today I am announcing Web Dev version 5, even though we never reached an out of beta version 4, no I am not inflating version numbers like Mozilla. I am totally scrapping the current code base, and starting again from scratch. This time it will be written in C++ instead of C#, primarily for performance reasons but also for cross compatibility.

I will however not initially be open sourcing the project like version 4, instead I will build in a plugin architecture, allowing 3rd partie developers to extend the functionality of Web Dev. And then if enough people request for me to, I may choose to release the source code.

I am planning lots of changes for version 5, that I hope you will like including:

  • Cross Platform compatibility
  • Web Kit/Geko based rendering engine (not yet decided which)
  • Plugin Architecture (probabbly initially windows only, later cross platform)
  • Better compliance with user profiles (Windows only)
  • Template Store
  • Ribbon or Menu or both interface, user selectable.
  • And much, much more. Stay tuned!

I would really apreciate your feed back, and feature requests. Please contact me webmaster [ a t ] giggig [ d o t] co [ d o t ] uk.

Thanks
